Eczema & Dermatitis

eczema and dermatitis

Eczema and dermatitis are skin conditions that result in dry, flaky, irritated skin. Dermatitis is a broad category that includes eczema and other similar skin conditions.

Eczema is an often uncomfortable skin condition caused by inflammation. It is most often characterized by itchy, dry skin that can create scaly patches, blisters and even infection.

The most common type of eczema, atopic dermatitis, is caused by an overactive immune system. Many people who deal with eczema experience flares, periods where the disease is more active.

Eczema isn’t limited to a certain age group. Everyone from babies to octogenarians can experience an eczema flare. And while the immune system can cause the start of the flare, environmental factors aren’t off the hook. Everything from extended exposure to extreme heat or cold to soaps and laundry detergents can cause eczema or dermatitis to rear its head.

Treatment for eczema and dermatitis includes topical medications, moisturizing creams, phototherapy, drugs that suppress the immune system and biologic medications. While no cure exists for eczema and dermatitis, treatments can reduce the incidence of flares and allow people to live their lives without constantly having to deal with skin inflammation.
